About Us

Nestled in the heart of charming Balestier, Cornerstone Bakes is a humble and small home kitchen-type of bakery which aims to serve the neighbourhood with warm, quality and affordable bakes and foods. We prepare bakes in small quantities in our homey warm kitchen to ensure freshness and quality, and hope that every bite will be satisfying and fill your stomach.

As you pass by our shop, you can sniff the yeasty and buttery aromas wafting out from the kitchen especially in the mornings, and often hear my young children’s laugher and chatter. My children love to draw on Post-It notes and pieces of paper, and they love to adorn the shop walls with their drawings. If there’s a constant in this shop – it is full of life!

Food has always been a companion in my life. I’m blessed to have been immersed in a vast array of food throughout my life, especially during my childhood time. As a child, I vividly remember my grandma whipping up yummy traditional Teochew food galore, like the once-a-year Nian Gao (年糕), which we will dig into eagerly with our chopsticks as it came out piping hot from the heated wooden steamer. My mom used to cook up a feast of comfort food during our birthdays – I especially like her colourful jellies nested in eggshells. I guess her butter cake must have looked and smelled very appetizing, so much so that a group of monkeys once scooted off with my mom’s freshly baked pillowy soft chempedak butter cake from the table. Besides all my beloved traditional yummies, I love crusty and chewy breads. That’s what prompted me to learn how to make such breads using natural yeast culture, sourdough starter.

I started Cornerstone Bakes as an avenue to share my humble sourdough crusty and chewy breads, together with other bakes and foods, including the traditional yummies I grew up savouring.

The bakes in the Sourdough Collection are made using sourdough starter maintained in the bakery. Every single sourdough bake is handcrafted and made with high quality ingredients without the use of commercial yeast, additives, or preservatives. The bakes go through hours-long fermentation and cold retard processes before they are baked fresh daily. Our sourdough bakes have their distinctive thin crust, mild sourdough flavour, moist and chewy crumbs.

Besides our Sourdough Bakes, there are other bakes and products, like cookies, crackers, cakes, jellies and more, which will be made available on a rotational basis.
